Third pillar for a self-employed person

Published 28 September 2026 · updated 3 October 2026 · Written or reviewed by Christophe Bouin

The word “self-employed” does not set the pillar 3a contribution. The test is affiliation to a 2nd-pillar institution. Without BVG/LPP: 20% of earned income, at most 36'288 CHF. With a pension fund, including voluntary affiliation: 7'258 CHF. Not every self-employed person has the large contribution.

The wider frame is the Swiss third pillar.

Do I get the large contribution because I am self-employed?+

Only if you are not affiliated to a 2nd-pillar institution. Affiliation, even voluntary, uses the small contribution.
