Pillar 3b, flexible provision

Published 6 November 2021 · updated 3 October 2026 · Written or reviewed by Christophe Bouin

Pillar 3b is flexible provision. It has no FSIO ceiling and is not deducted like pillar 3a. In 2026, pillar 3a deducts 7'258 CHF with a 2nd pillar, or up to 36'288 CHF without one. Pillar 3b is for choosing a beneficiary, keeping access to the money, or covering someone with no OASI income. From 1 January 2027 the Federal Council sets 7,373 francs with a 2nd pillar and 36,864 francs at most without one. The 20% rate is unchanged. Cantonal premium envelopes

Geneva and Fribourg allow life-insurance premiums inside cantonal limits. Orders of magnitude that circulate: 750 CHF / 1'500 CHF in Fribourg for some premiums, and 2'232 CHF / 3'348 CHF often cited in Geneva. Those are premium caps, not an automatic tax credit. The year’s notice wins.

The wider frame is the Swiss third pillar.
